Mitsuyo Fujioka (藤岡 光代, Fujioka Mitsuyo) is the daughter of Amane, the twin sister of Yukiyo Misaki, and the mother of Mei Misaki and Misaki Fujioka.

Background

Before the start of the series, around thirty years ago, Mitsuyo was born with her younger twin sister Yukiyo (or Kirika). They both got married, and soon Mitsuyo was pregnant with twins. Those twins are revealed to be Mei and Misaki. Yukiyo also became pregnant, but she miscarried, leaving her devastated. At that time, the Fujioka family was experiencing financial difficulties. Because of this and the fact that Yukiyo was still trying to cope with the loss, Mei was given to her. After this, Misaki needed a kidney transplant. The giver was Mitsuyo herself. Despite the transplant being a huge success, Misaki's condition took a sudden turn for the worst, and she died on April 27th from complications related to the transplant. Misaki's death left Mitsuyo and her husband incoherent with grief.

Appearance

In the manga, Mitsuyo has long, straight black hair and black eyes. She looks like Yukiyo.

Personality

Misaki said in the OVA that Mitsuyo still hopes Mei can forgive her. Also, she thinks of Mei as her daughter and wants to see her. Mitsuyo knows it was wrong to send Mei away. Misaki also said that she's still suffering. From what Misaki said, Mitsuyo seems to be a kind-hearted, gentle, and protective woman.

Plot

In the anime, Kōichi Sakakibara and Mei talked about Mei's mother, but her name wasn't revealed until the OVA when she is mentioned by Misaki.

In the sequel novel, Another 2001, Mitsuyo divorced Mr. Fujioka about a year after the events of the original novel. Kotaro Misaki, Mei's father, was worried for her, so he helped Mitsuyo get remarried, leading to Mitsuyo changing her name to Mitsuyo Makise. In late 2000, she moved to Yomiyama, which allowed her to establish contact with Mei through cell phone and even meet in person without Yukiyo's knowledge. Mitsuyo was spotted multiple times at the hospital by Sou Hiratsuka, who mistook her for her twin sister Yukiyo. She went there in order to tend to her new daughter, Misaki Makise, who had been hospitalized since the beginning of the school year. Due to Misaki actually being her late daughter resurrected by the curse, Mitsuyo completely forgot her existence after Misaki was killed at the hands of Mei.

Etymology

  • The name Mitsuyo means "light" (光) (mitsu) and "generation" (代) (yo), which literally means "generation of light".
  • Mitsuyo's surname, Fujioka, means "wisteria" (藤) (fuji) and "ridge, hill" (岡) (oka).
